Project Description: The EmerSAT Project has been funded by the Italian Space Agency (ASI) with the aim of developing a new satellite network to be used by the operators in emergency scenarios. In particular the main end user of this infrastructure will be the Italian Civil Protection and by the Fire Brigades.
The core network will be based on the new generation of DVB-RCS Satellite, able to perform dynamic Connection Admission Control and Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation in heterogeneous traffic scenarios. This concept is at the basis of critical communications, since it allows an intelligent traffic management, for example, able to adapt to the different phase (and needs) of an emergency and to guarantee the adequate level of QoS.
CRAT Contribution: Within the framework of the project, CRAT will design and develop the CAC (Connection Admission Control) and BoD (Bandwidth on Demand) modules, in charge of performing the above mentioned adaptation functionalities to traffic conditions and needs.
In particular BoD module is based on Smith Predictor and automatic control algorithms, while the CAC module is mainly based on Markov Decision Processes and Reinforcement Learning.
CRAT is also in charge of performing a study to enable the regenerative SkyplexNet architecture with similar dynamic traffic management capabilities.
